The Sustainability Specialist will focus on reporting sustainability data and metrics, providing sustainability technical assistance to improve operations, and communicating how Earthjustice practices sustainability. The ideal candidate for this position is passionate about the mission of Earthjustice, has a great appreciation for data and reporting, and knows the value of great storytelling. They will be essential in helping align operations with the mission of Earthjustice.

This position will report directly to the Director of Sustainability and Impact and will collaborate with the Real Estate and Workplace Strategy Team and other colleagues supporting sustainability initiatives.

This is a remote U.S. position.

Responsibilities

Technical Support and Analysis (50%)

  • Manage data collection for sustainability metrics and key performance indicators, including the annual greenhouse gas inventory.
  • Complete annual greenhouse gas inventory analysis and reporting in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
  • Engage with internal teams to deploy and operationalize greenhouse gas emissions reduction programs.
  • Act as an information source and provide technical assistance to staff regarding sustainability initiatives, policies, and questions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement sustainability efforts aligned with overall organizational goals and strategies.
  • Support execution of sustainability in major events in partnership with Events.
  • Serve as a resource to third party vendors on sustainability awareness and drive commitment toward emission reduction.
  • Research best practices and innovative approaches.
  • Other projects, as assigned.

Engagement and Education (30%)

  • Report sustainability metrics and key performance indicators, including annual greenhouse gas inventory, to stakeholders.
  • Promote sustainability initiatives to staff, and possibly potential employees, partners, and supporters.
  • Coordinate sustainability learning and impact volunteer opportunities for employees.
  • Actively manage and update intranet Atlas space for sustainability.
  • Develop resources for staff to integrate sustainability practices into their daily lives both at work and outside of work.

Training and Development (20%)

  • Review technical documents, reports, legislation, and news on sustainable operations to stay updated and informed on latest developments. As required, provide summations of relevant learnings to staff.
  • Participate in networking with industry peers.
  • Ongoing education on topics of interest pertaining to this position including but not limited to operational processes, feedback, emotional intelligence, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Experience managing data-intensive processes with a focus on accuracy and quality control.
  • Working knowledge of sustainability industry trends and policy implementation.
  • Experience leading projects from initiation to completion.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office’s suite of programs.
  • Experience with Greenhouse Gas Protocol preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to collect and handle sensitive/ confidential data.
  • Experience working with Operations staff (Finance, HR, Facilities, Events, IT, etc.) .
  • Storytelling and ability to transform data into digestible content.
  • Experience working independently on multiple assignments or engagements, even in a virtual environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate new creative ideas and take projects from concept through implementation in a constantly changing environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work amicably with various departments and offices, while still accomplishing goals and meeting deadlines.
  • High-quality work standards and ethics, strong attention to detail, and willingness to dedicate time and hard work to Earthjustice.
  • Passionate about environmental and racial equity issues.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrates an awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds and orientations.
  • Contributes to the creation of a diverse, equitable and inclusive work culture that encourages and celebrates differences.

Salary is based on experience and location.

Salary range in San Francisco, CA or New York, NY: $85,100 - $94,600
Salary range in Seattle, WA, Washington, D.C., or Chicago, IL: $80,900 - $89,900
Salary range in Denver, CO or Philadelphia, PA: $76,700 - $85,200
Salary range in Miami, FL, Texas (state), or Atlanta, GA: $72,500 - $80,500

Remote salary range for other locations in the U.S.: $72,500 - $89,900
