Overview

Microsoft is looking for a Program Manager, Decarbonization Data and Strategy to join the Renewable Energy Team within the Cloud Operations + Innovation Organization. This position will be responsible for supporting the team that is advancing Microsoft’s 100/100/0 vision that 100% of electrons on the world’s grids, 100% of the time, will be generated from zero-carbon sources. This role will focus on collecting, analyzing, presenting, and engaging with the market to advocate for more granular energy data.

This Program Manager will enable data-driven carbon-free energy procurement, support strategy development, and demonstrate Microsoft’s progress toward its carbon-free commitments. This role will provide the candidate a unique opportunity to join a market leading team in innovative procurement and gain a wide range of exposure to global energy markets.

The successful candidate will have a passion for decarbonization, experience working with large datasets, proven cross-functional collaboration, and analytical skills. Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Supply Chain, Data Analytics, Business, Finance or related field AND 2+ years’ experience in Data Science/Analytics, Finance, Project Management, Supply Chain, and/or Operations.
  • OR Master's Degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Materials Science, or related field AND 1+ years experience in procurement, supply chain, sourcing, engineering, operations, or relevant sales-related roles
  • OR equivalent experience.
  • 1+ years of experience in the energy sector. 
  • 1+ years of experience with database management process and schema, ETL processes, and reporting tools.

  • These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

 

Additional or Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Ability to work cross-functionally across technical and non-technical teams and to create a cohesive strategy that spans multiple teams.
  • Proven ability to perform in ambiguous environments and thrive in a dynamic work environment.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills, especially the ability to explain complex issues clearly and concisely.
  • Growth mindset with problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Python, R, or other interpreted programming language and/or data-querying skills such as SQL.
  • Understanding of wholesale power markets and energy agreements.
  • Familiarity with any of the following: SQL or other querying language, large scale data management, or data system / platform architecture. 

 

Sourcing Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $94,300 - $182,600 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $120,900 - $198,600 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Manages and enables granular data collection across Microsoft’s consumption and generation portfolios; engage with key internal stakeholders to translate business needs into corresponding data requirements, and build out data architecture and platforms to meet team objectives.
  • Develops strategy for engagement in market development and advocacy efforts with industry associations responsible for advancing data standards and granular carbon-free energy procurement.
  • Uses insights from data work to advance the strategy and approach for Microsoft’s publicly stated procurement goal, 100/100/0.
  • Supports process development and tooling for measuring Microsoft’s next generation carbon-free energy procurement impact in collaboration with key stakeholders.
  • Engages with external vendors responsible for developing and providing granular consumption, generation, and carbon data.
  • Supports Renewable Energy Procurement team with work on commercial pilots that require granular data enablement.
  • Provides ad-hoc support for contract negotiations with actionable feedback on data needs and supporting mechanisms.
