Carbon Direct is decarbonizing the global economy.

What is Carbon Direct? We are a team of scientists, engineers, and innovators with a shared goal of reducing atmospheric CO2 by scaling carbon management.

What do we do?We operate two distinct businesses:- Advisory & Software: We work with Fortune 500 corporate clients like Microsoft, Shopify, and Alaska Airlines to develop long-term carbon management plans. We’re also building a platform to facilitate the procurement, purchasing, and monitoring of carbon removals, helping make net zero emissions a reality for all businesses.- Investments: We scale the supply of quality removals by investing in high-potential technologies vetted by science-backed sourcing and diligence.
The science is clear: we need to pair CO2 emission reductions with removals to limit global temperatures to 1.5C, and the time to act is now. Our 40+ leading scientists have expertise in all areas of carbon management, from carbon footprinting to carbon removal procurement, and their insight guides our work.

Our team is data-centric, diverse, and purpose-driven. Join us on one of the greatest journeys of our lifetimes: the transition to net-zero.

The Role We’re looking for an experienced Mechanical, Chemical, or Process Engineer who will help Carbon Direct accelerate carbon removal based on sound scientific and engineering expertise.  The ideal candidate will be able to seamlessly transition between different types of tasks, from strategic planning of carbon removal portfolios to detailed reviews of equipment design and process flowsheets. Specifically, you will work in interdisciplinary teams of scientists, other engineers, and business leaders to advise clients on carbon removal strategies and tactics.  Your advice will support decisions to deploy high quality engineered and hybrid carbon removal systems.   Ongoing work will include: educating and advising clients on the opportunities of carbon removal with a focus on direct air capture, biomass carbon removal and storage (BECCS/BiCRS), mineralization, and aqueous removal, leading due diligence efforts to ensure that proposed carbon removal projects meet our criteria for high quality removal, contributing to firm-wide efforts to grow the supply of high-quality carbon removal via hybrid and engineered solutions, and contributing engineering know-how to the firm’s outreach efforts that inform policy and the general public.

Responsibilities

  • Advise clients on carbon removal.  Help clients understand the opportunities and risks associated with hybrid and engineered solutions by analyzing and communicating the lifecycle impacts, costs, and scalability of different approaches to carbon removal.
  • Conduct due diligence of engineered and hybrid carbon removals: Lead due diligence teams to ensure that projects result in high quality, low risk, high value removals.  Analyze heat and mass balances, energy and utility use, equipment specifications and design, construction and operational strategies, and project finance.
  • Research and communication:  Contribute to reports, policy briefs, and peer-reviewed publications.  Actively engage with social media and participate in public events to communicate the engineering challenges and opportunities of carbon removal.

Experience

  • Masters or PhD in engineering or closely related field - process engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering or environmental engineering.
  • Demonstrated work  experience in industry, academia, or government. Depth of experience in a specific carbon mitigation/removal technology, or breadth of experience assessing multiple technologies a plus.
  • Communication - Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate technical information into accessible forms and adapt styles to diverse audiences and different cultural environments.
  • Engineering Analysis - Able to independently build, populate, and operate spreadsheet-based engineering & economic models. Preference for advanced modeling skills (e.g., ASPENPlus, Ansys) and other technical software packages (e.g., ArcGIS, MatLab)
  • Systems and Data Analysis - Familiar with life cycle assessment (LCA) and technoeconomic analysis (TEA) methods for environmental impact and cost estimation of carbon removal technologies.  Preference for proven ability to build and operate such  models in spreadsheet frameworks or dedicated tools (e.g. OpenLCA, GaBi)
  • Collaboration and Building Relationships - Relates well to people from varied backgrounds and different situations; is sensitive to cultural diversity, race, gender, disabilities, and other individual differences; Demonstrated experience (professional or non-professional) building and maintaining intra-and inter-institutional relationships with colleagues.
