Company Overview

Molecule Ventures is a climate-focused investment management firm operating within environmental markets and making direct investments into climate solutions.  Our first fund invests in the California cap-and-trade program, which puts a price on greenhouse gas emissions to drive capital towards lower-carbon-emitting technologies and processes. Our second fund has a broader mandate to invest across environmental commodities and attributes. The firm was founded in 2020 by a New York City-based team and currently manages $350M and has made a handful of small direct investments.

Two of the team’s principals were co-founder and partner at JANA Partners LLC, a large, successful equity markets hedge fund, and two have deep environmental/energy experience and commitment.

Job Description

Molecule Ventures is seeking a passionate, highly organized, and analytical professional to join the team as their new Research & Operations Associate. The most immediate focus will be on the operations side of the position, though the role is intended to evolve into a mix of research analyst responsibilities and operations.

On the operations side, you will work closely with firm partners and service providers to provide expertise and hands-on support to maximize the efficiency of day-to-day business operations. You will help develop, implement, and maintain processes and controls to ensure tasks are completed effectively across all functional areas (e.g., Accounting, Audit, Tax, Compliance, Marketing, Human Resources).

In the research analyst portion of the role, you will assist partners and other firm professionals in evaluating investment opportunities across environmental markets, such as cap-and-trade, voluntary carbon, LCFS, RECs, and other structured programs related to lowering emissions.  You may also provide support in researching early- and growth-stage clean tech companies and other investments across the climate solutions ecosystem.

We are looking for someone who not only understands and appreciates that delivering operational excellence to the entities and individuals who trust us with their capital is of the utmost importance but also is excited to learn about all the opportunities to deploy capital in the green economy and deeply energized by getting to participate in building a business in this ecosystem.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Coordinate financial planning/budgeting processes and direct the timely payment of invoices/expenses to enable consistent updates to books and records across entities.
  • Provide trade life cycle and portfolio control support (e.g., trade confirmation, collateral, reconciliation, etc.).
  • Maintain and manage federal, state and asset/security regulatory and compliance obligations for the company and its funds.
  • Lead accounting and fund net asset value (NAV) calculation functions including valuation, reporting, and timely delivery of account statements and investor reporting.
  • Provide tax and audit support for the firm, its funds, and its clients to ensure timely completion and distribution.
  • Help manage human resource functions and company benefits.
  • Research newly emerging environmental markets.
  • Evaluate direct investment opportunities within climate-related businesses.
  • Assist partners and other investment professionals in considering business expansion.
  • Participate in ad hoc projects that help the business grow.

The ideal candidate:

  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, economics, accounting, or an environment/sustainability-related program.
  • Either demonstrated experience in operations or environmental issues with a clearly stated indication of interest in assisting in fund operations.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Fast learner with the ability to multitask and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (particularly MS Excel).
  • A commitment to or demonstrated interest in a career in clean energy with an understanding of the role of markets and private capital in combatting climate change.
