MacKinnon, Bennett & Company Inc. (“MKB”) is a Canadian private investment firm that specializes in providing growth equity to the food and agriculture, next generation energy and transportation sectors. MKB takes material minority positions in its portfolio companies and proactively assists management teams in reaching their full potential.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join our growing team as a full-time Associate in Toronto or Montreal, offering the successful candidate an opportunity to gain direct exposure to investment decision-making and transactions in innovative and growing markets.

 

Role & Responsibilities: 

The Associate will be an integral part of the investment team for the full lifecycle of prospective investment deal activities – sector research, identifying and sourcing potential investments, due diligence and deal execution. Post-investment activities will help portfolio companies scale and achieve profitable, sustainable growth. For both prospective and existing investments, the successful candidate will focus on:

  • Research and analysis of sector companies, related industries and markets
  • Developing financial models for evaluation of investment opportunities
  • Execution of due diligence activities, include preparing internal and external memos, presentations, reports and proposals
  • Proactively identifying growth prospects and operational dependencies/risks
  • Building investment business case decks supporting investment recommendations
  • Identifying and assessing follow-on / secondary opportunities and exit opportunities
  • Providing portfolio analysis including consolidated financial analysis, operational benchmarking and company valuation modelling
  • Monitoring of investments including regular tracking and evaluation of performance metrics, ongoing reviews against original investment cases, valuation issues and changes, opportunity and risk assessments, competitive and industry developments, etc.
  • Support and development of tracking tools and business development tools

 

Across MKB generally:

  • Accountable and responsible for the completion of multiple competing projects within time-sensitive deadlines
  • Creating content and contributing to MKB’s marketing strategies and methods of stakeholder engagement (e.g., newsletter, blogs, annual general meetings)
  • Contributing to ESG and impact policies and reporting
  • Overseeing, managing, reviewing and coaching Analysts and work product

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and MBA, CFA, MA, MS or equivalent with emphasis in finance/accounting or sustainable agriculture/food systems and related concentrations;
  • Minimum 2-3 years’ experience in operating, management consulting, investment banking, venture capital, private equity or climate-tech related role;
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills; ability to process and synthesize large and varied amounts of information and to communicate as simple concepts;
  • Highly motivated self-starter with proven ability to manage multiple, simultaneous projects with conflicting, evolving priorities;
  • Entrepreneurial spirit driving passionate ownership, process improvement and track record of exceeding expectations
  • Demonstrated interest and/or commitment to areas of sustainability, essential service sectors such as agriculture and food systems a definite asset;
  • Expert-level Microsoft Excel and Powerpoint skills
  • High EQ with excellent relationship management and collaboration skills; and
  • Strong verbal & written communication skills, in English and French preferred.
