Job Purpose and Background

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is looking for an outstanding individual to lead the net-zero programme within the Technical Team. The Net-Zero manager acts as “product owner” for the recently developed the SBTi’s Net-Zero Standard – the first standard for setting corporate net-zero targets in line with climate science. The Net-Zero Manager will lead integration of the Net-Zero Standard into the initiative as well as the wider climate action ecosystem.

The SBTi is seeking a dedicated, mission-driven individual to join the highly motivated, successful net-zero team at the Science Based Targets initiative. You will have strong technical and applied knowledge of relevant concepts and standards around GHG accounting as well as corporate climate target-setting and action.

About the SBTi

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global body enabling businesses to set ambitious emissions reductions targets in line with the latest climate science. It is focused on accelerating companies across the world to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions before 2050.

The initiative is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and one of the We Mean Business Coalition commitments. The SBTi defines and promotes best practice in science-based target setting, offers resources and guidance to reduce barriers to adoption, and independently assesses and approves companies’ targets. Key responsibilities include:

  • Acting as “product owner” for the Net-Zero Standard and associated documentation (e.g. criteria, submission form, tool)

  • Integrating net-zero throughout the wider initiative, which involves working closely with all other teams within the SBTi

  • Building capacity within the wider ecosystem on the Net-Zero Standard in collaboration with the SBTi’s Impact Team

  • Contributes to the development of strategic partnerships related to the SBTi net-zero work

  • Ensures alignment of the Net Zero project with the SBTi’s overall technical work and messaging

  • Oversees and / or contributes to new projects related to net-zero, e.g. scope 3, neutralization

  • Contributes to communication materials and collaterals related to the SBTi net-zero work, e.g. relevant blog posts

  • Works as a member of the SBTi’s Standards Team (sub-team within Technical Team), reporting to the Head of Standards, and directly managing the Net-Zero Project Officer

 

Essential skills and experience needed:

  • Strong technical and applied knowledge of relevant concepts and standards around GHG accounting as well as corporate climate target-setting and action

  • Strong understanding of the drivers for and practical challenges of implementing climate action strategies across businesses’ operations and value chains

  • Excellent project management skills

  • Experience in convening complex, multi-stakeholder processes. Ideally experience in sustainability standard setting processes;

  • Excellent writing skills, including the ability to make complex technical subjects accessible to non-expert audiences

  • Proven ability to work collaboratively in a culturally and geographically diverse professional environment

  • Experience in science-based targets, greenhouse gas accounting, preferably in line with the GHG Protocol, net-zero and corporate climate strategy

 

Desirable criteria:

  • High proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint

  • Ability to digest and communicate technical information to non-technical audiences

  • Understanding of corporate climate action space

  • A relevant university degree
