About Counteract

Counteract is combating the climate crisis by helping scale early stage carbon removal companies. Our goal is to bring forward rapid, scaled and just adoption of CDR through catalytic investments in early stage companies with the potential to each enable or deliver at least 0.5Gt of CO2e removal by 2050.

We offer scientifically minded entrepreneurs the financial and strategic support to turn fresh ideas into self-sustaining businesses with the potential to capture or store greenhouse gases at global scale. Our focus is on the earliest stage of a company’s life (often pre-seed/seed) - research, prototyping, market development - to prove new theories and unlock new pathways in this vital space.

Our founding team are experienced entrepreneurs and investors from the world of media, finance, technology, sustainability and consulting, with a shared track record of growing global organisations from startup to global scale and a shared belief that business can be a profound force for good.

The role

Counteract is looking for an ambitious Analyst or Associate with relevant prior experience to join our team and support all stages of the investment life cycle. You will help research CDR pathways, identify and analyse promising investment opportunities, develop investment business cases, execute deals and work with portfolio companies to help them succeed. You will have exposure to all aspects of the investment lifecycle in one of the most important and exciting technology areas worldwide.

We’re a small firm so you will be working closely with more experienced members of the team and will encounter lots of opportunities for growth. You will be expected to take ownership of tasks without a lot of day-to-day supervision, so you’ll need to be a motivated self-starter who brings high standards and lots of energy to work.

We’d like all applicants to have some early stage investing experience, ideally in a Venture Capital context but working with an angel syndicate, accelerator or advisory setting could work too.

Some of the things we’ll ask you to do

  • Get up to speed with the negative emissions space, understanding the technologies with greatest potential and barriers to their growth

  • Build a personal network forming relationships with researchers, entrepreneurs, investors and ecosystem partners to identify promising carbon removal opportunities

  • Help maintain our investment pipeline and connected deal tracking data

  • Support in the valuation, deal modelling and carbon impact forecasting for new investments

  • Help drive the deal transaction process for individual investments, including compliance and legal matters

  • Support investment paper development and commercial and technical diligence, consulting with outside experts as required

  • Make sure portfolio companies get the benefit of your growing network and complementary skills to access the advice they need

  • Help build Counteract’s profile through social channels, blog posts, events and networking

Skills and capabilities you will need

  • Passionate care about our climate and environment. You must attach utmost importance to the future of our planet and have faith in our collective ability to turn the tide on the climate crisis.

  • Curious mind with a hunger to grow. You will thrive in a dynamic, evolving and fast paced environment as part of a small team with varied experience.

  • Exceptional critical thinking and business acumen. You know how to get to the salient questions quickly, reality-check assumptions and assess the viability of ideas. You have great instincts but also the ability to pressure test your own conclusions.

  • Outstanding relationship building skills. You love meeting new people, building partnerships and working in varied teams.

  • Some experience with early stage investments, ideally in a VC, accelerator or angel syndicate. Climate tech / clean tech experience valued but not essential.

  • Strong analytical skills - you’ll need to be in your element working with data and financial models. A quantitative analysis experience ( professional or academic) is highly beneficial.

  • A natural sciences background is really helpful - engineering, chemistry, plant science, geology, climate science, environmental science or economics in particular.

  • Approachable, empathetic and generous. You should be at ease working with scientists and engineers and able to help them navigate unfamiliar realms just as they guide you in theirs. You won’t be shy about challenging others, though you will always do so with kindness and respect.

  • A natural self-starter - curious, motivated, thorough and imaginative, comfortable working in agile, fast-changing environments.

Counteract’s offices are in central London, UK. Most of our team work a mixture of remote and in-person, with a minimum of 2 days / week in the office. You should also be prepared for some business travel to visit companies and attend industry events.
