Position Focus:

The Yale Center on Climate Change and Health (YCCCH), a university center based at the Yale School of Public Health, is a global leader in addressing the health impacts of climate change in a just and equitable way through research, education, public health practice, and policy. The center is poised to expand the scope of its activities and their impact, and seeks a dynamic, innovative, and deeply knowledgeable public health professional to play a lead role in its expansion. The Executive Director, working closely with, and reporting to, the YCCCH Faculty Director, will collaborate with the Faculty Director in the overall leadership of the Center and will take primary responsibility for leadership and growth of the Center’s public health practice and policy activities. Responsibilities include strategic planning, fundraising and grant writing, supervising Center staff, creating and monitoring budgets, leading engagement with external partners and stakeholders, leading new program initiatives, and managing the Center’s day-to-day operations. Leadership of YCCCH public health practice and policy activities includes 1) leading and expanding the scope of the YCCCH Policy Impact Unit; 2) leading the YCCCH Program on Climate Change and Health in Connecticut and serving as the Principal Investigator on the Yale subcontract with the Connecticut Department of Public Health on its Building Resilience Against Climate Effects CDC grant; and 3) serving as co-instructor for the YSPH Clinic in Climate Justice, Law, and Public Health.

Essential Duties: Lead the YCCCH Policy Impact Unit and expand its reach from Connecticut to a regional and national scope. The Executive Director will build strategic research translation activities and will facilitate bidirectional communication between YCCCH researchers and communities (including policymakers) to drive policy and systems change. Lead the YCCCH Program on Climate Change and Health in Connecticut and serve as the Principal Investigator on the Yale subcontract with the Connecticut Department of Public Health on its Building Resilience Against Climate Effects (BRACE) CDC grant. Serve as co-instructor for the YSPH Clinic in Climate Justice, Law, and Public Health, in which interdisciplinary student teams carry out applied public health research or practice projects related to the clinic’s theme. Manage the day-to-day operations of YCCCH, including human resources, development, finance and budgeting, events, communications, and publications. Supervise YCCCH staff and Student Fellows. Maintain regular and frequent exchanges with the YCCCH Faculty Director about the operation of the center. Lead the development, updating, and monitoring of the YCCCH long-range strategic plan. YCCCH’s current strategic plan ends June 2024, and the Executive Director will develop a collaborative planning process that engages YCCCH faculty, staff, students, advisory board, and other stakeholders in informing the new strategic plan. Pursue fundraising for the Center’s strategic vision in partnership with the YSPH Development Office; lead engagement with external partners, foundations, and corporations; author and coordinate grant applications and associated progress reports for those awarded. In collaboration with the Faculty Director, design, secure funding for, and implement new program initiatives in line with the Center’s mission, strategy, and goals as outlined in the strategic plan. Serve as primary author of YCCCH’s annual report. Develop and maintain relationships with key YCCCH stakeholders: identify and cultivate community, state, and national partnerships and collaborations in support of YCCCH’s short- and long-term strategies; support Faculty Director to organize and facilitate annual YCCCH Advisory Board meetings. Represent YCCCH to various internal and external audiences.

Essential Duties

1. Directs one or more functional areas within an administrative department of the University and ensure compliance with University policies and procedures. 2. Directs analytic and research support for educational policies and planning and develops and approves administrative policies affecting assigned functional areas of the University. 3. Directs and establishes parameters for major projects for the department and University. 4. Interprets federal policies and regulations and educates staff and administration about regulations, restrictions, and the legal responsibilities of the University. 5. Directs and implements policy and program modifications and develops standards to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.  6. Develops and administers an operating budget for the assigned department consistent with University policies and procedures. 7. Develops cost savings objectives and goals; authorizes major purchases and negotiates contracts that range from routine to complex in nature. 8. Establishes and implements long- and short-range goals for the functional area consistent with University goals and objectives. 9. Directs the development of related automated systems to support the function; determines office policies and procedures for use of automated systems. 10. Directs the evaluation and selection of vendors and negotiates contract details including work steps and pricing with the vendors on behalf of the assigned functional area. 11. Works with internal and external contacts to solve problems that range from routine to complex in nature. 12. Represents the University in discussions and negotiations with various governmental agencies. 13. Directs a staff of exempt and nonexempt employees. 14. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in related field. Six years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Doctoral degree; content knowledge of climate change and health, acquired through direct work experience and/or coursework; experience in public health practice or policy related to climate change and health; experience as a leader and innovator.
