The ideal candidate is a self-starter who is comfortable in a fluid work environment, takes ownership of projects and workstreams, and is able to synthesize and communicate information clearly and concisely.

What is The Engine?

The Engine, spun out of MIT, is a venture firm focused on solving the world’s biggest problems. We invest in early-stage companies at the convergence of breakthrough science, engineering, and leadership. The Engine accelerates the path to market for Tough Tech companies through the combination of capital, infrastructure, and network. Since opening our doors in June 2017, The Engine has committed resources to 40+ portfolio companies and created an unprecedented framework for bringing Tough Tech from the lab to the commercial world. We also operate over 150,000 sq ft of office, lab, and fabrication space around Cambridge, MA.

What is Tough Tech?

Tough Tech is a transformative and broad approach that applies cutting edge technology to society’s biggest challenges. We believe that these areas are all interconnected — that addressing climate change must go hand in hand with improving issues surrounding global supply chains and food systems, and vice versa. Tackling these areas will unlock massive opportunities to transform industries for the better. Check out some of the teams building transformative technologies in our portfolio:

Climate Change

Human Health

  • Mori: A natural coating that reduces food spoilage and packaging waste.
  • Seaspire Skincare: The future of sustainable skincare.

Advanced Systems & Infrastructure

  • Sync Computing: Optimizing the resources at the heart of every cloud computation.
  • Resonant Link: Using wireless charging to unlock new opportunities in mobility and medicine.

What does The Engine do differently?

We are working to create a positive impact on society and the environment, focusing on Tough Tech to address the planet’s most challenging problems. We believe a healthier population, a more accessible and adaptive society, and a more resilient world are all possible through science, engineering, and leadership. Our role at The Engine is to help bridge the gap between discovery and commercialization for the most promising teams and breakthrough inventions – so they don’t get stuck inside a lab.  The Tough Tech ecosystem, which The Engine fosters through events and convenings, is designed to help founders gain momentum as they build and grow their companies. The ecosystem succeeds when everyone in it can both contribute their expertise and benefit from the network: through talent, partnerships, investments, and resources. The Engine invests broadly while maintaining an allegiance to our roots at MIT, Boston, and the greater New England region. Our physical spaces in Cambridge make it easier for foundational companies to start and grow in the region and we work with governments, corporations, and academic institutions on efforts that will make sure our economy is built to not just meet the challenges of the future, but to actually shape the future for the better.

About the Role

An important part of The Engine’s efforts within the Tough Tech ecosystem is our network, facilitating the creation of long-term mutually beneficial relationships between founders, startups, strategic corporate partners, policy makers, and investors. We convene the investment, government, academic, regulatory, and corporate communities to help accelerate the progress of those working to grow and build Tough Tech companies. We create opportunities for our portfolio companies to learn from the lessons of existing large corporations and industry leaders. Simultaneously, industry and government have a chance to learn from The Engine’s portfolio companies and collaborate on how to augment or build upon existing solutions. Together, our network helps remove obstacles and clear a path to commercialization and success for our portfolio.

The Program Co-op is a cross-functional role that supports The Engine’s program team in helping Tough Tech founders grow their businesses and develop as leaders. The program team is responsible for executing events and programming for the Tough Tech community, including but not limited to: Blueprint, Whiteboard, Business Development Day, Portfolio Company Workshops, Provocations, our annual Tough Tech Summit, and more. As a Program Co-op, you'll have the opportunity to significantly add to our efforts in elevating our programming, marketing, community, capital stack, strategic coverage, government relations & networks, and operations efforts. This co-op is flexible and we want to work with you to establish learning goals during your time with our team. Things to consider when applying for this role includes: What areas are you interested in exploring within venture capital? What unique skills can you offer to support us in elevating our programming and providing value to our portfolio of founders? Which area of Tough Tech and broader impact inspires you?
