Backed by world-class investors and technologists, we are a fast-growing startup seeking a Software Engineering Leader who can help us grow our product, engineering team, and define our tech stack, as well as impact our vision and our culture.
 
We are looking for an experienced Software Engineering Leader to architect the software and data product function from start to finish, laying the foundations for everything from how we attract top talent to how we ship high quality code. As a successful  leader, you have built, mentored and led world class engineering teams.  You share our values of determination, trust, and excellence, and grow and support the junior members of our team. 
 
This is a unique and timely opportunity to work closely with our founder and CEO, lead the development of a platform and mission that will accelerate global draw down of greenhouse gasses.  The ideal candidate for our software engineer position is passionate about building reliable and delightful systems that span the spectrum across hardware, science, data, and software.

What you'll be doing:

  • Define and design our software infrastructure for our carbon mitigation systems
  • Identify and implement technologies for data ingestion, transform, and analysis
  • Build and guide an exceptionally talented and productive organization that functions autonomously, is technically innovative, and executes on the product roadmap while simultaneously  supporting individual career goals and collaborates with other areas of the Thalo team.
  • Create and execute development plans, deploy best-in-class processes and innovate in software development. Proactively identify, prioritize, triage and resolve development issues as they arise working closely with company leadership.
  • Lead by example. Be a strong technical partner for the leads and engineers. Be a domain expert in one or more technical areas such as backend engineering,  server infrastructure etc. but also be comfortable leading a technical discussion in any domain.
  • Successfully manage the code creation process, establish best practices for all aspects of SW development to hit SW release dates and company goals.
  • Ensure that technology decisions enable the long term goals of our products and company.

Requirements:

  • BS, MS or PhD in Computer Science or related technical discipline (or equivalent)
  • Strong technical credentials, with at least 5 years’ experience leading software development teams, ideally with hands-on architectural and OOD experience
  • Experience developing, deploying, and landing multidisciplinary hardware/software products into the real-world. You bring current expertise in backend technologies.
  • Technically deep and able to engage with engineers on technical design and direction
  • Substantive experience developing and building innovative, interactive customer experiences, and data visualization.
  • Interest and ability to get your hands dirty when evaluating solutions
  • Experience in crafting technology strategy & roadmap, and executing on this roadmap
  • Thrive in a fast paced start-up environment. Ideally experience in growing an early stage or internal startup
  • Proven ability to make critical decisions about performance/time/risk tradeoffs
  • Respected as a team builder and mentor and hands on engineer/ architect
  • Strong experience leading cross disciplinary engineers in the areas of  Data, Mechanical Engineering, iOT and proven experience creating scalable, robust backends.
  • Proven ability to architect and design large sustainable projects and complicated systems
  • Excellent communication skills - particularly the ability to discuss timelines, design concerns, and to provide helpful feedback to team members
  • Proven success as an Agile process leader and mentor going from early prototype to shipping product and post-launch product support
  • You not only are willing to, but want to, roll up your sleeves, collaborate with others and get stuff done.  You are a hands-on leader.
  • Passion for mitigating the effects of climate change is a big must

Nice to have's:

  • Advanced degree in field of interest
  • Experience with complicated hardware/software systems, particularly related to sensing and/or industrial processes
  • Experience deploying a network of IoT devices, knowledgeable about solutions to remote management, OTA firmware updating, and log management
  • Background with containerized microservices and distributed systems in deployment
  • Core expertise in a related field, including but not limited to: embedded software development, DevOps, etc.,
  • Comfortable with Python and C++ on embedded Linux and microcontroller platforms

  • Target compensation for this role at our current stage is between $150,000 and $180,000 depending on level and experience plus generous equity option grants at the ground floor.
