To feed and house 10 billion people in 2050, calorie production must increase by 56% and timberland production by up to 200%.  According to the World Bank, this requires an investment of $350 billion globally every year.  This must happen without using more land and with lower carbon emissions, while concurrently restoring and protecting natural ecosystems. Natural capital and the ecosystem service it provides are the foundation of both human wellbeing and the economic system. Nature-based solutions can deliver many local ecological and socio-economic benefits. They help achieve the sustainable development goals, protect biodiversity, and mitigate climate change.

We seek a transformational leader with significant experience in developing and implementing strategies to protect and enhance natural capital assets at an international level. The ideal candidate will be monitoring evaluation and reporting on the ecological, social, and economic value of agricultural, forestry, wetland, environmental and climate change mitigation projects is a key requirement. Reporting to the Head of Portfolio Management, there is flexibility in the location of this role but London, Chicago, New York, Singapore, Frankfurt, or Sydney where Nuveen has significant presence is preferred. Specific responsibilities include:

  • To shape and develop nature-based climate solution investment strategies.
  • Coordinate the investment process, oversee, and participate with local teams in the origination of a pipeline of impactful natural capital investment opportunities globally.
  • Assess and mitigate the environmental and social risks of investments, measuring their financial, social, and environmental performance.
  • Promote climate smart regenerative agriculture, afforestation, reforestation, agroforestry, sustainable forestry, restoration of natural vegetation and projects that reduce emissions from deforestation and environmental degradation.
  • Report on investments, manage investor communications, and provide input to board meetings.
  • Assess carbon and biodiversity project eligibility and monetise ecosystem services where possible.
  • Develop and mentor a team of natural capital analysts.
  • Play a leading role in current and future fundraising activities.
  • Managing relationships with stakeholders, including government agencies, community groups and conservation organisations
  • Monitor investments with an adequate level of involvement (e.g. board seat, site visits).
  • Develop expertise and a network of external partner and advisors by participating in events and conferences and building lasting relationships across the investor, investee, government and conservation organisation community
  • Establishing environmental, social and governance management frameworks for investments

The ideal candidate will have the following experience, education, and personality characteristics:

Experience / Education

  • Real asset investment experience and a strong investment track record, ideally with 8+ years’ experience in the monitoring and evaluation of nature-based capital solutions for either an investment manager, investment bank, venture capital fund, insurance provider or nature organisation.
  • Previous experience working for an international development organisation in the Agricultural or Forestry sector would be an advantage.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, guidance, and best practices related to natural capital, ecosystem services, environmental valuation, carbon offsetting and net zero emissions.
  • Experience of innovative financing methods for nature-based solutions.
  • Knowledge of GHG quantification methodologies and international standards for measuring financial, social, climate and biodiversity impacts of projects.
  • Experience with carbon projects, including an understanding of carbon standards
  • Good technical understanding of GIS data management and knowledge of digital tools that quantify environmental impacts.
  • University degree in Environmental Sciences, Natural Resource Management, Economics, Sustainability Management, or other related fields: a master’s degree or MBA would be an advantage.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as excellent communication and project management skills, are also important.

  • Able to work collaboratively across different business functions; distribution, product, marketing and operations.
  • Robust network with international development organizations, policy forums, academia, relevant working groups, governments, and NGOs.
  • Open, problem-solving and critical mind-set; ability to analyse and synthesise.
  • Capable of being accepted and respected at board level.
