Overview
Just Climate is a mission-driven investment business established by Generation Investment Management targeting attractive risk-adjusted returns by backing the highest impact climate solutions. We focus on the highest-emitting, harder-to-abate industries - including steel, cement, aviation, shipping, trucking, land use and agriculture- that create over 60% of global emissions. These industries are the building blocks of our future green economy. We pursue 'climate-led' investing: we start with climate impact, identifying solutions that can make the biggest difference. We then direct and scale institutional capital to those solutions that can generate attractive risk-adjusted returns.
The Just Climate business has two strategies, one focused on Industrial Climate Solutions, or ICS (with a first fund raised) and another on Natural Climate Solutions that was announced in late 2023.
Consistent with its existing ICS strategy, Just Climate's NCS strategy aims to direct capital at scale globally to businesses that can generate highest climate impact and attractive financial returns. It will focus on three sectors - Food and Agriculture, Restoration and Conservation, and Durable Carbon Removal, bringing capital and business building support to help scale promising growth-stage business models.
Position Overview
We are seeking one or two experienced graduate-level Summer Associates to join our Natural Climate Solutions investment team for 6-10 weeks this summer (c. May-August 2024). We are open to a range of skillsets, and we will work with our interns to design a programme of work that matches team needs with their skills and interests.
Location: London, United Kingdom and/or Sao Paulo, Brazil in-person and/ or San Francisco, California
While this is an in-person internship, we particularly encourage applications from US-based candidates who can temporarily relocate to one of our locations and access the Generation or Just Climate offices for connectivity.
Potential Workstreams:
• Work as part of deal teams to assess potential investments
• Lead the development of research roadmaps into priority areas and business models
• Make sense of policy developments in agriculture, carbon markets etc. and how they might translate to investment hypotheses in our focus areas
• Monitor the progress of existing investments and contribute to portfolio management
Qualifications
• Prior demonstrable experience investing or operating experience in areas such as food and agriculture, nature-based carbon project development and assessment, open-systems durable carbon removal, sustainable bioenergy, or related fields.
• While direct investment experience is not a requirement, we do have a preference for candidates with a strong understanding of business evaluation and financial modelling.
• Similarly, an academic background in biological, agricultural or environmental sciences, or a related discipline is desirable - we have several team members with technical backgrounds.
• Collaborative mindset and the capacity to work effectively within a diverse global team.
• Mission alignment and a strong commitment to addressing the climate and nature crises.
