Company Overview:
At Arch, we envision a future where every home in the US is sustainable. Arch builds the software that enables society to transition to a world powered by heat pumps. As a high growth climate tech startup, our driven team of seven is dedicated to turning this vision into reality. We're searching for our fourth and fifth engineering team member, dynamic individuals with a deep-rooted passion for the environment and a proven track record across early-stage startups. We are backed by Gigascale, Coatue, Floodgate, ReGen, MCJ, and the founders of Aurora Solar.

About the Role:
We’re looking for a scrappy product builder who is impact-driven and wants to define the engineering culture as one of our first engineering hires. Your work will contribute to directly improving the daily lives of millions of homeowners and heat pump installers while drastically reducing emissions. You will build new and delightful features, develop powerful new capabilities, and hire the best possible team.

Impact:
Residential homes are responsible for 18% of CO2 in the US. Heat pumps can drastically reduce these emissions. Our mission is to make sustainable heating and cooling technologies so accessible that the adoption becomes inevitable.

Job Requirements:
- Min. 5+ years of experience as a software engineer.
- Enjoy having exposure to every part of the product.
- Substantial experience in an early-stage startup (e.g., ex-founders, founding engineers, one of the first 10 employees).
- Driven by the urgency to significantly and quickly move the needle on climate change.
- Comfortable with uncertainty and rapid changes and have an owner’s mindset.
- Comfortable with TypeScript, React, and Postgres.
- Super supportive – especially when teammates are faced with new challenges.
- Put yourself in the shoes of our users to craft a great experience and excited to hear user feedback.
- Value clear, frequent communication (we do a lot of reading & writing).
- Uphold best practices in engineering, security, and design.
- Value simplicity and pragmatism (think radically but ship incrementally).
- Experienced in building data infrastructure that is both scalable and extensible.
- Self-directed and comfortable working autonomously.

What You Will Achieve:
- Be an integral part of our core founding team and shape our product/company’s roadmap.
- Contribute to building our first product to help millions of households save money and drastically reduce their carbon footprint.
- Work with a variety of large, unstructured data sources to train and test models.
- Deploy models into production, evaluate and improve their performance over time.
- Hire a team to work with you to 10x your output.

Why Us:
Embark on a unique journey with us as a Software Engineer, where you will play a significant role in addressing climate change. This rare opportunity allows you to not just be part of the solution but to also substantially move the needle in a global context. Our team, backed by top-tier investors, is recognized as ideally suited to tap into a gigantic emerging market. Our core values define our work culture and approach:

- Ownership: We embrace autonomy to make our own decisions, aware of broader company goals and direction. We own our work. We proactively step up to do what’s needed to move the team and mission forward.
- Act with Urgency and Focus on Our Mission: We address climate challenges with urgency and a strong bias for action. We set ambitious goals and focus on what’s most important to advance our learning and user satisfaction. When in doubt, we pick progression over perfection.
- Champion Excellence and Camaraderie/Kindness: We intentionally bring our best selves every day in the pursuit of supporting others, bettering ourselves, and the company in the pursuit of excellence.

As a member of our team, you'll find these values ingrained in every aspect of your work. They are not just ideals; they are the practical principles guiding us toward making a significant impact in the fight against climate change. Join us, and be part of a team where your work is aligned with meaningful values and a mission that matters.

Interviews & Compensation:
- Interviews start the week of February 12th.
- We will discuss compensation bands by the 2nd interview.

Unsure if you meet every requirement?
We still want to hear from you! Research indicates that many qualified candidates, particularly women and people of color, may hesitate to apply for a position unless they meet all the criteria. At Arch, we believe in the value of diverse perspectives and experiences. We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment and encourage candidates from all backgrounds to apply, even if they do not fulfill every single qualification. Your unique skills and experiences may be just what we need!

Who You’ll Work With:
Philipp (Co-Founder & CEO): Hi there 👋 I am Phil. I grew up on a small strawberry farm in Bavaria, Germany. I am a sports enthusiast and usually go for hikes on weekends. I am eager to learn more about meditation and biohacking. Before founding Arch, I graduated from Stanford with an MBA and a Master’s in Environmental Science, built large-scale solar power plants (180+ employees) around the world, and worked at McKinsey as a management consultant, helping software companies to exceed their growth goals. During my time in solar installation, I realized that I want to dedicate my career to work on things that matter. Ask me about: Favorite cafes and brunch spots in SF.

Sacha (Co-Founder & CTO): Originally from Belgium, currently living between Sydney, AU, and SF. I taught myself programming very early. I hold a double M.Sc. in Engineering and Management. I love the intersection between engineering, design, and strategy which naturally drew me towards holding “product” roles. I built a few companies – some complete misses (like a Tinder before Tinder while at Uni), some more successful (40+ employees, fast growth, ex-YC). I felt a strong urge to act on Climate while witnessing the devastating fire seasons in AU and CA. This led me to building an AI for first responders to identify zones of ignition within a few minutes to extinguish them ASAP.

FAQ:
- Where is Arch located? We do not have an official office yet - at the moment, we’re spread between the West Coast and East Coast. As we grow, parts of the team (Business) might be partially required in office (NY & SF).
- Are you okay with remote employment? Yes! We allow remote work in the U.S. (due to timezone convenience and administration). We have team offsites every 3 months, which give us the chance to bond, plan, and work together in person. As we grow, parts of the team (business) might be partially required in office (NY & SF).
- Have you raised any money? Yes - happy to tell you how much over the phone. We are a seed stage company with more than 24 months of runway. It’s in the many millions of dollars range, from firms who invested in some of the world’s best technology companies including Notion, Figma, Lyft, Tesla, Aurora Solar. We also have some of the best climate tech investors we could dream of.
- What is work/life balance like at your company? We usually leave work around 6.30 PM to have dinner with friends or family. As a result of being an early stage startup, we wouldn’t want to hide this reality to prospective candidates: raw hours actually make a big difference in the impact we can make right now. This won’t always be the case but it is at present. So, often we find ourselves working later on in the evening, on rare occasions a weekend, but it’s mostly driven by personal ambition.
- How will Arch make money? Our interests are aligned with those of our clients - as we help them become more efficient, we are charging a subscription fee and will capture percentage points of the transactions through Arch.
- How big do you think the market is for this? The US and EU markets have a TAM of $35+B.
- Are you open to bringing on interns for any of your roles? Not at this time – unfortunately, we don’t have the bandwidth necessary to offer a stellar internship program. We need to invest every ounce of energy into making a great product first.
- How many people do you plan to hire? We plan to stay extremely efficient but grow the team as our customer demand is increasing. The next set of people are going to help us to scale to hundreds of paying users as we progress to product-market-fit.
- What stage is the product at? We launched a product and it’s completely operational. The largest heat pump contractor in the Northeast is fully up and running with more than 200 interactions each week. We have a strong pipeline of implementations for the next three months and are currently expanding this pipeline further. We still have a lot to figure out so we’re going to go through continuous iterations over the next 6-12 months.
- Curious how we think about focus for Arch? We are focused on the pace of iterations and deliberately delivering an imperfect product in the hands of our users, with the goal to convert them to paying clients as quickly as we can with our values in mind.
