About Work on Climate

Work On Climate is a 501(c)(3) non-profit focused on building the workforce to solve climate change equitably and justly.

The world will need hundreds of millions of people working on building a clean economy. A necessary step on that journey is supporting a robust ecosystem of founders starting organizations that make a meaningful contribution to solving climate change while creating jobs.

We made our name building the world’s largest professional and entrepreneurial community for people who want to work on climate. Our community has over 3500+ founders and people looking for co-founders, from large public climate companies to early stage startups backed by well known VCs and prominent non-profits. Our work has been highlighted in most major business press, from FastCompany to the New York Times.

About the role

You will be responsible for helping thousands of talented and passionate founders in our community acquire the skills and build the connections necessary for success. The work you do with these founders should be done with constant attention to scalability and a path to indirect impact far beyond the community in the coming years.

The right candidate for this role is someone with a passion for working with founders, a wide range of community management skills (including facilitating online or in person events and discussion in slack), strong writing skills (e.g. producing informative content for founders and marketing language for community events and programs), good communication skills with internal and external stakeholders, an ability to be organized and manage projects — both individually and via a network of collaborators. Previous experience working with founders, particularly climate founders, will be highly considered.

You will run a new program helping founders gain the skills they need for the success:

  • Design and run founder-related events and programs (including sourcing speakers or experts, coordinating with stakeholders, facilitating group activities, etc.)
  • Run regular welcome calls for community members who are or want to be founders
  • Maintain and improve community-facing founder-related content, such as starter packs, onboarding materials, and notion/website pages — keep this content up to date both with our programs and with the wider trends of the founder ecosystem
  • Participate in discussions among founders, keep a pulse on the community, engage with members directly and help them connect with each other and with relevant resources
  • Ensure that our programs effectively support diverse founders
  • Perform user research on the needs and experiences of community founders
  • Contribute content to the community newsletter and social media highlighting important founder related programs, events, and resources
  • Be the main point of contact for WoCl members on founder-related topics. Become viewed as a critical resource for climate founders in our community.
  • Execute operational tasks as needed to make your work more efficient or robust, such as setting up forms, automations, collecting and performing basic analysis of data

We are looking more for a combination of talents and inclinations than for specific credentials:

  • You care about climate change and are aligned with the idea of solving it by engaging founders in building a greener economy
  • You are passionate about understanding and helping people (and founders in particular), and are highly thoughtful about what it takes to be truly good at it
  • You are able to empathize with, collaborate with, and see the world through the eyes of people whose background or circumstances are different from yours.
  • You have exceptional communication skills: you are charismatic when facilitating events; you write clear, concise, and helpful content; you can de-escalate a tense dialogue
  • You speak truth to power; you are equally comfortable constructively challenging others’ ideas or delivering difficult messages to a peer, a report, or a higher-up
  • You check, double-check, and triple-check; you are known for being obsessive over details that others may overlook — things go smoothly when you’re in charge
  • You have strong collaboration, project management, and basic people management skills: you can get a group of busy people with different working styles to deliver a project together, and maintain strong relationships with those you work with regularly
  • You are pragmatic, nimble, resourceful, self-driven, and organized — you only need direction for strategic guidance, never as a reminder that something needs to be done. When you’re stuck, you quickly and proactively seek help to get unstuck.
  • Both novelty and consistency appeal to you – when parts of your work are recurrent, you take pride in delivering reliably excellent output every time
  • You have a passion for learning and learn quickly — when you need a new tool to get the job done, you get excited and quickly become fluent with it
  • You have strong technical literacy and are able to make your work more efficient or more reliable using tools, including no-code tools
  • You are interested in thinking about complex systems at a root level, analyzing causes and ways of creating the most influence with the least effort

That said, some combination of the following would be a strong signal for us:

  • Experience working with founders, a good understanding of the realities of being a founder at early stages / in climate
  • Experience in a start-up environment, whether private, public, or non-profit
  • Experience with managing projects and/or people, and meeting metrics-based goals
  • Experience facilitating online events or workshops
  • Experience and passion for helping diverse users
  • Experience conducting user research or collecting and analyzing data
  • Technical or business aptitude, such as a background in engineering, science, finance, business development, or other disciplines related to commercialization of technology.

This is a full-time role; the compensation is between $60-80k per year; we provide excellent health insurance and 15 days of PTO per year. This is a remote role and we are open to all US-based candidates. The role may require some minimal travel (up to a week per quarter).

We see diversity in the climate workforce and a Just Transition to the clean economy as vital to our mission, and thus we encourage applicants from all backgrounds to apply for open roles at Work On Climate. We respect the humanity and individual circumstances of all our team members — while our standards for each other are high, we strive for a healthy work-life balance.
