About Marble
Marble is a climate tech venture studio. Our north star is to erase billions of tons from annual greenhouse gas emissions and create a thriving future.
We partner with scientists, engineers and operators to create new deep tech companies that solve hard climate problems — slash emissions, remove carbon from the atmosphere, and cool the planet — while reshaping multi-billion $ industries.
We're proud to be backed by leading climate investors across Europe and the US.
About the Role
We are hiring a Principal (Venture Scientist) to play a leading role in selecting areas for new venture creation, sourcing top founders in residence, developing high impact climate companies with strong technical differentiation, and supporting Marble companies.
You will work directly with Partners, senior team members, and brilliant founders on a mission to turn the tide on the climate crisis. You will have weekly interactions with some of the brightest individuals in the space across science, industry, VC, etc.
The role offers direct exposure to leadership functions such as strategy, investment decisions, and investor relations, plus the opportunity to sharpen your domain expertise.
Location: Paris - we can sponsor visa if needed
Language: English fluency required. French proficiency is a plus.
Responsibilities
The Principal role involves end-to-end responsibility across the board:
- Research. You will lead the development of multiple climate tech opportunity theses based on thorough market and technical research, to prioritise white spaces where Marble should create new companies, and focus talent sourcing accordingly.
- Sourcing. You will proactively source top talent with high founder potential and relevant domain expertise to create companies with Marble. You will work collaboratively with the whole team to recruit excellent Founders in Residence for each cohort.
- Venture Creation. You will guide the venture creation process by supporting founders throughout the programme, ensuring robust diligence (science, engineering, market, TEA, IP, team, roadmap, risks, financials, etc) and making investment recommendations.
- Portfolio Support. You will support Partners to maximise the success of Marble companies after spinout, helping with follow-on fundraise, non dilutive funding, industry connections, hiring plans, lab access, IP, etc. You will play a key role in developing our network of top investors across the climate capital stack.
Beyond these core areas, you will get involved in multiple supporting activities. Examples include content creation (articles, decks) for external comms and internal memos, legals, ecosystem relations, representing Marble at key events, as well as special projects, such as working with Partners on the future of Marble (e.g. our next investment vehicle).
You will have the opportunity to hire and manage junior colleagues.
The role involves occasional travel for events and meetings.
Requirements
The Principal role is ideal for a scientist with prior experience in deep tech venture:
- You have a PhD level technical expertise in a domain that is highly relevant to climate tech (ex: chemical / process / mechanical / electrical / systems engineering / mineral processing / energy / industrial biotech / synthetic biology / etc)
- You have 3+ years of experience in early stage investing or venture creation in deep tech. Additional exposure to industrial scale up or applied science is a plus.
- You have a track record in evaluating (e.g. deep dives, industry analysis, market maps) climate technologies across multiples sectors, e.g. clean energy, industrial decarbonisation, carbon removal, critical minerals, agriculture, adaptation.
Your ability to learn on the job is more important than ticking every single box. However we would especially love to hear from you if this sounds like you:
- You can easily navigate across the technical, commercial and financial. You ideally are proficient in several of: techno-economics, process modelling, product development, technical roadmap, FOAK, unit economics, funding strategy, IP, go-to-market, etc
- You have extraordinary sourcing skills. You know how to identify, approach, evaluate, and convince the top 0.1% people in a target domain — even before they have a company.
- You have excellent taste for what good looks like in climate tech, and sound judgment in analysing tech, teams, roadmaps, markets, business plans, risks, etc.
- You are a great communicator. You can write excellent memos and deliver engaging presentations to build and defend a conviction.
- You are a creative systems thinker. You can think in first principles and generate non obvious insights from multiple disciplines to generate novel ideas.
- You make things happen. You are outcome focused, action oriented, and comfortable with ambiguity. You have a track record of end to end project completion.
- You excel at building and managing relationships, with a prior network in climate tech.
- You are a people person. You are approachable, empathetic and generous, with a high level of emotional intelligence. People feel energised around you.
- You are a pragmatic optimist with a driving motivation to mitigate climate change.
